Red Bird of the South by LadyViridis Red Bird of the South by LadyViridis
Man, it's been forever since I painted a pheonix.

This is the Red Bird of the South, one of the four Chinese guardians of the cardinal directions. I'll be doing the full set-- hopefully in time for Gen Con.

The Red Bird/Pheonix symbolizes the South, summer, red, and fire.

It doesn't really show up in the scan, but the original painting has metallic gold ink for most of the lines on the pheonix, so the picture actually shifts as you walk around; from one angle all the feathers and such are sharply defined, from the other angle you just see a faint shine and the bigger glowing shape. It's really rather cool. :) I'm hoping to integrate some metallic ink into all four of these pieces.

11 x 14", Watercolor & Ink on Arches 140lb watercolor paper.
