Jinja

Final painting for my watercolor class. This is a picture of Itsukushima Jinja, ("Jinja" means "shrine") which, at least when I visited in late 2003, was on the island of Miyajima, not too far from Hiroshima.

This painting came about because as usual when hunting for something to work on when I had no other ideas, I went through my old photos from Japan, and realized that I wanted to paint this temple, with the bright oranges contrasting the blues from the water. (I later found a second photo that I think was what I originally had in mind, from the same location but a different angle, and may paint that separately.)

The original is 16 x 24", with a watercolor base and then colored pencil over it for more color depth and shading.
